Because it sits outside the Fairwork Act and other related employment legislation, the obligation of every employer to check (and monitor) the Right To Work of all staff is in my opinion, the most overlooked compliance obligation in Australian HR and Payroll departments.

It would appear people keep looking for someone to blame for the spate of underpayments that keep grabbing media attention in Australia in recent times. Invariably it falls on the excessive “burden of compliance”, software vendors and the poor old payroll technicians. What an absolute crock!

One of my favourite tech. industry sayings is “eat your own dog food” (aka “dog-fooding”). For those not familiar with it, Investopedia explains it as:
A colloquialism that describes a company using its own products or services for its internal operations…The basic premise behind “eating your own dog food” is that if a firm expects paying customers to use its products or services, it should expect no less from its own employees.
